If you've ever been on "the receiving end" of an expert, you'll relate to this tale all too well. Picture this: you're knee-deep in crafting a marketing campaign for a client, only to be met with a polite request to refrain from asking certain questions that might make said client appear clueless. It's a delicate dance of diplomacy, where genuine inquiry risks being mistaken for incompetence. Inwardly, you can't shake the thought: "If I don't grasp it, rest assured, neither will a significant portion of the target audience you are trying to impress."
The Rookie Stigma
As I pondered this peculiar predicament, it dawned on me that I, too, have sometimes succumbed to the silent tyranny of withholding my voice in business meetings. Why? Have I been conditioned to mimic the confidence of those dominating the conversation? The alternative - that silent "rolling-eye effect" hiding behind the mask of impatience was not an option I wanted to entertain. So you refrain from asking the question, opting instead to consult the almighty Google!
It seems that the fear of being relegated to the ranks of novices looms large all around. Someone recently posed a question in the comments on a Facebook group. After several people responded, the original poster remarked, "Ah, thank you, rookie mistake". But why label yourself as a rookie? What's the point of entertaining that notion - whether you're a rookie or not? Having the courage to pose a question publicly is anything but rookie behaviour!
From Specialist to Expert to Master
In this dizzying landscape of self-proclaimed specialists, experts, and masters, the lines blur between public perception and reality. What distinguishes one from the other? According to the 'gospel of Google', an expert boasts extraordinary knowledge, while a specialist hones their craft in a particular niche. But when can one rightfully claim the title of specialist? It seems that distinction lies in the depths of one's dedication and qualifications. The criteria for earning these titles remain subjective though.
To Google, we go – just for fun…
Last but most definitely not least for today's tale - the expert who became a master, the pinnacle of proficiency. But what sets a master apart from an expert or a specialist? Is it a matter of credentials, accolades, or sheer charisma? Surely the true mark of mastery lies not in titles? Or is it the allure of the master class, where expertise and renown converge in a convincing blend of perception, and titles are indeed bandied about like currency in a marketplace of self-promotion?
Blueprints and Magic Bullets
And then there are the blueprints, the holy grail of business success. But are they truly the silver bullet they purport to be, or merely a marketing ploy to impress unsuspecting souls? In a world where authenticity is often eclipsed by the allure of authority, it's easy to get lost in the labyrinth of labels. Most masters, experts, and specialists sell us their user or how-to guides, but they call them blueprints. As Tea Silvester Godfrey, founder of Story Bistro, astutely noted: "It's almost like 'blueprint' equals 'magic bullet' in our collective subconscious. Like a GPS system that will give you turn-by-turn instructions for running a business."
Take a moment to contemplate that as you navigate the intricate terrain of entrepreneurship!
Here's the final kicker - even if titles may only be shaped by perception and not necessarily defined by reality: As a colleague shrewdly said, "If I say I am an expert or a specialist, people believe it".
One can add, "If I offer a masterclass, people assume I am the subject master; if I offer a blueprint, people download it because it sounds authentic."
And so the dance continues, a delicate balance of perception and reality in the ever-shifting sands of the business builder age.
