To Post or Not to Post: Navigating Father's Day on Social Media

There are all kinds of dads: your dad, your children’s dad, the mentor dads that have crossed your path, the dads-to-be, the grateful dads, the regretful dads, and the lonely dads.

When you look at posting your Father’s Day message, remember that these posts resonate deeply with people on social media. Most Father’s Day posts get significant engagement on almost any brand’s social channels. These posts often just say... well, nothing really... "Happy Father's Day from us," but the accompanying graphic can make you smile or even shed a tear, achieving the desired emotional connection. But what does the perfect Father's Day post look like? Here lies the challenge.

The Power of a Father's Day Post

Father’s Day posts have historically seen high engagement rates. According to a 2023 HubSpot report, Father's Day posts can boost engagement by up to 60% compared to regular posts. Iconic ads, like Dove Men+Care's “Calls For Dad” campaign, Cheerio’s 2014 “How to Dad” campaign, and Google Chrome's Dear Sophie as part of "The Web Is What You Make It" campaign, have shown the power of connecting emotionally with the audience, garnering millions of views and shares.

Consider Your Brand and Audience

Two critical factors to consider are your brand’s stance on Father’s Day and your audience’s demographics. If your audience isn’t primarily parents, the gurus might suggest not extending the wish. However, this can feel exclusive - everyone has a father, even if they aren’t one themselves. Some businesses prefer to steer clear of emotional content, but emotion is a powerful connector in marketing. A 2022 study by Kantar found that ads with emotional content perform nearly twice as well as those with only rational content.

Embracing Inclusivity

When posting, consider inclusivity. Understand that many might not have a positive fatherly figure. Yet, unless you have an extensive budget for detailed audience research, you can’t accurately gauge this. And then there is the notion that there is something more important to say on a Sunday in June when many celebrate the positive side of dads. I would like to see what could be more important than the concept of a family with a loving, good dad. So it boils down to who you are and who you want to pay it forward to on Father's Day.

The Personal Touch

On a personal note, I miss my dad. I wish he were here to pass on his wisdom, discuss business nuggets, and talk about the politics of the day. I remember a few wonderful dads who have helped me spread my wings and fly into spaces I might not have dared to enter alone. And last, but most certainly not least, I'm blessed with a very alive and present dad for my child to celebrate with on Sunday. Therefore, my Father's Day post mirrors my brand - embracing emotion, business, mentoring, and lifelong learning. As far as my audience goes, that's!

Crafting Your Perfect Post - If That Exists!

So, what does the perfect Father's Day post look like? It's a blend of brand authenticity and audience relevance. Here are some tips:

  • Embrace Emotion: Don't shy away from Father's Day's emotional aspect. Share heartfelt messages or stories that reflect your brand's values.
  • Be Inclusive: Acknowledge all types of father figures. Celebrate mentors, single moms pulling double duty, and anyone who embodies the spirit of fatherhood.
  • Engage With Your Audience: Ask your followers to share their stories or photos. This creates a feeling of community and increases engagement.
  • Visual Appeal: Use compelling visuals. Whether it's a touching photo or a well-designed graphic.
  • Keep It Real: Authenticity resonates. Be genuine in your message, and ensure it aligns with your brand's voice.

Final Thoughts

Posting a Father's Day message can indeed be a delicate balance, but it also presents a wonderful opportunity to connect with your audience on a deeper level. Whether you choose to post or not, remember that the essence of Father's Day is celebrating the positive influence of dads and father figures.

So, as we approach Father's Day, I wish those who can celebrate a special moment or three and those who can't to find joy in allowing others to celebrate in their own way.

Your brand's voice on this day can spread love, gratitude, and a sense of community, making a meaningful impact on your audience.
